Visual Art Werks was once again in the building, Building C of the Georgia World Congress Center for DREAMHACK 2023.
This time DTM got a chance to share his creative process when creating digital art for games including characters, elements, objects and assets. Met a lot of cool people, said hi to folks I knew already and had an overall amazing experience. Plus I learned a lot just by hanging out at some of the panels and listening to the experience and advice of veteran and newcomers.

In this workshop I will show you how to create animation and game art from a sketch to finished illustration with the most popular apps available for professionals. This session is for anyone starting their digital art journey creating 2D art for comics, character art and game assets. Character Concept Process
The Inspiration
Exploring Character Art Styles. El Azteca Moderno - Frank aka Tenuch
My creative process starts with sketching in Adobe Fresco with pencil brushes. Sketching is especially important when the character doesn't yet exist as an image. All of these sketches were drawn with Adobe Fresco. In this example with El Azteca Moderno, I want to capture the image of a young adult/late teen character on a quest. We see lots of sketches exploring different art styles, body types, and elements that make the character recognizable in the story plus fit two different mediums, comics and gaming!
Time for some ink, nope, not yet!
Once we have a style that fits our story and character, we are ready for inking with vector brushes. The first image shows where we settled on the art style, the details and the features that reflect the young adult/late teen age. Just when you think you are ready for the next step, a new ideas comes along and now I need to draw that instead! And so the process starts again, blue sketches were drawn on Sketchable App on Surface Book 2.
Let the inking and colors begin!
My character art influences started with comics, so most of my character art has an outline for the clothing, gear, character elements and details. Sometimes I create art without outlines or very little linework and that depends on the storyline mood and project requirements.

I slowly realized that I did not have the knowledge to build it so it has been a work in progress and will have a first look in 2022 with the help of mentors and gaming resources coming from @Microsoft and #XBoxGameStudiosGameCamp!

Today is also the last day of @pencilwars #drawing contest so get your last minute pledges and #pencil #art in! #pencilwars_artlife We get that question a lot and now we have an answer! We didn't forget our Android using fans. Not at all. Our development plans have been growing ever since we decided to reach out to our friends and family thru Kickstarter. To be honest, I first pitched the game idea to Chad Carter, our developer, as a Windows game and he agreed to work with me on the game for fun. Our initial goal was to build the game to Windows Phone 8 and Xbox 360. Then as we spoked about the game out loud in presence of others, the iPhone was brought into the conversation. As art and code is developed and the Kickstarter campaign came into focus, it became apparent that we would HAVE TO reach out to iOS users if we wanted Art Life to make a serious dent in the Mobile Game Industry. And now we are here. Fans have spoken, pledges have been made and we are that much closer to producing the Art Life experience in comic books, coloring books, fine art and of course: The Mobile Game on Win Phone 8 and iOS. Our first stretch goal is reserved to get the Art Life onto the Google Play Store for all Android users. We have to go for it. We are not overreaching when we say we are going to make the Android version available if you can help us get to 6K in less than 5 days. Thats right. as of Saturday afternoon our campaign is at $5,286 and we only need $714 for us to push that much harder in 2014 into developing the Art Life code into Android. Do you know any Android Gamers interested in the Art Life? then help spread the Art Life Gospel!!! http://kck.st/I4zyRs DTM -creator We are nearing the finish line and we are looking for your help in a couple of ways to make this campaign complete! we have the developer coding the iOS and Windows 8 game app and with your help we can get the comic books on board. Heres how you become a team player: 1. pledge at least 10bux to the campaign. http://kck.st/I4zyRs I guarantee you we will fill your email inbox with all types of Art Life digital goodies beyond the campaign pledge. every bit helps! 2. share the link on Facebook and/or twitter to your followers.
